Project description
DESIDERATA addresses the critical challenge of reducing Substances of Concern (SoCs) in the chemical value chain by advancing the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework in real-world industrial applications. Focusing on flame retardants, surfactants and plasticizers, DESIDERATA aims to develop safer, sustainable alternatives without compromising performance or cost-effectiveness. The project addresses current gaps in the SSbD framework, including data scarcity at low technology readiness levels, undefined safety and environmental criteria, and trade-off management.
Leveraging a multidisciplinary consortium of industry leaders and research institutions, DESIDERATA will test innovative solutions such as halogen-free flame retardants, graphene-based materials and inorganic polymer surfactants in different use cases. These efforts will provide valuable insights to refine the SSbD framework, enhance its practical applicability and support EU sustainability policies. In addition, the project will foster a trusted environment for secure stakeholder collaboration, covering R&D, regulatory compliance and market uptake. By bridging the gap between policy and practice, DESIDERATA contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting circular economy principles and ensuring safer chemical innovation, ultimately moving Europe towards a toxic-free environment and sustainable industrial leadership.
